College Sport Evaluation has a unique mission.
It strives to help parents and athletes navigate the path to collegiate sports by providing them with sensor data and evaluations to determine their developmental needs. They combine objective and subjective measurements to give athletes a complete look at where they stand and what they can do to get where they want to be.
Using TeamGenius’ player evaluation app, CSE provides athletes with reports documenting their scores and developmental needs.
“Our basis is being able to tell kids where they fit in the collegiate level. So, whether that is D1, or JuCo, anywhere in between, that’s our goal to be able to tell kids where they truly fit,” said Madi Schmidt, CSE’s Director of Events.
CSE uses objective data like running times, agility times, arm velocities, and other measurements, and pairs them with subjective data from the coaches.
“We’ve married those two together to get an overall score and a better idea of where kids could fit at the collegiate level,” Schmidt said.
How CSE’s Evaluations Benefit Players
CSE has a specific method of giving players a complete objective and subjective evaluation.
To demonstrate how this is done, Schmidt used the example of a baseball pitcher. If a player has a pitching velocity of 95 mph, as some Major Leaguers do, they will take that number as their objective data. Then, they add in subjective evaluations to give context to the speed. For example, if they are asking coaches to evaluate the accuracy of the player’s pitching, they’d give them a scale of 1 to 5 to rank the player and add comments ranging from Poor Accuracy to Great Accuracy, and everything in between.
Once the data is entered into the TeamGenius app, CSE takes the information and creates a custom report for each athlete. It includes their objective measurements and their subjective feedback.
“Each report we produce is one-of-a-kind to that athlete,” Schmidt said. “We’ve had parents and players use that report to actually hand to college coaches and say, ‘Hey, look at me, this is what I did, this is where I am ranked.’” Schmidt said.
They’ve also had athletes use the reports as a developmental guide to determine where they need to improve and how they can make those changes to get to the next level.
Currently, CSE is working on creating a developmental library for kids who need to work on certain skills. It will provide resources like information on camps they can attend to improve their skills.
How TeamGenius Helps CSE Evaluate Players
CSE has used TeamGenius since right after its inception in 2020.
Initially, the organization used a PDF form on an iPad. This created a lot of manual entry and required a lot of work after the evaluations. The staff had to read the commentary from the coaches and pull the information into individual reports for players.
CSE knew they needed a more efficient solution, and the TeamGenius app was recommended to them. It saved them time and provided a solution to easily document their objective and subjective data.
“TeamGenius allows us to do both in the same setting. One of the features I really personally love about TeamGenius is that I can go from recording a foot speed in one form to talking about this kid’s foot speed in another form. It just pairs super well,” Schmidt said. “[It] allows us to capture both at the same time.”
CSE also appreciates how intuitive the app is for their coaches.
“The ease of use on the field for our coaches is massive,” Schmidt said. “They find it very easy to switch from form to form, making that subjective, objective pairing easier.”
Because of the success they’ve had with the app, CSE recommends other organizations use TeamGenius as well.
“There is nothing but a benefit for (using the app), being able to tell kids where their strong pieces are, and weak pieces are, and how to develop them,” Schmidt said.
