Utah Avalanche Soccer Club Success Story

The Challenge
Utah Avalanche and AFC Apex clubs attracted many athletes for tryouts, which caused delays during the check-in process. According to Paul Skolmoski, Director of Marketing and Technology at Utah Avalanche and AFC Apex, the clubs ran tryouts over the course of one week, with about 500 kids participating each day. To accommodate the number of athletes, tryouts were held in two blocks of time each day with three age groups running in each block.
“There was just a lot of chaos,” Skolmoski said.
The registration process required athletes to check in before they were assigned a group. This manual process was time-consuming. Coaches didn’t get a list of athletes for each group until about 30 minutes into the tryout sessions, leaving them with very little time to identify players and conduct evaluations.

The Solution
To reduce the amount of time it took athletes to check-in, Utah Avalanche and AFC Apex turned to TeamGenius. Using the application, the clubs could enter each registered player into the platform before tryouts. The check-in process was the reduced to a few clicks in the app.
“It saved staff countless hours at Check-In. It's been slick. The parents love It.”

The Result
By using TeamGenius, Utah Avalanche and AFC Apex greatly sped up the check-in process.
“It saved staff countless hours at check-in,” Skolmoski said.
Staff members were able to simply pull up the app, select players as they checked in, take player photos and assign numbers. All administrators had real-time access to the player information, so coaches didn’t have to wait for lists to be complied and distributed.
In addition to using TeamGenius at tryouts, Skolmoski said he’s also using the platform for player evaluations during the season. He’s able to set criteria and save it in the software. That way he can perform mid- season and post-season evaluations based on the same criteria to see an athlete’s progression throughout the year. “It’s been slick,” Skolmoski said. “The parents love it.”
