The road to Omaha is always brutal, and the 2026 field has lived up to that reputation. Out of 64 teams that entered the NCAA Baseball Tournament, the 79th Men’s College World Series has now been whittled down to just four. Played at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, this year’s tournament kicked off June 12 and runs through June 21 or 22, with every game on ESPN.
Six days in, the bracket has delivered exactly the kind of chaos college baseball fans hoped for: a historic individual performance, two SEC heavyweights eliminated, and an Oklahoma team that refuses to lose. Here’s where things stand and what’s still to be decided.
What Is the College World Series?
The College World Series is the culmination of the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament — an eight-team, double-elimination event held annually in Omaha, Nebraska. Since 1950, Charles Schwab Field (formerly TD Ameritrade Park) has been the home of college baseball’s biggest stage.
The field is split into two four-team brackets. Each bracket plays double elimination, with the two bracket winners meeting in a best-of-three championship series. One loss doesn’t end your season, but two does — which means every game carries enormous weight.
The 2026 CWS is the 79th edition of the event, and it features a completely fresh crop of teams — none of last year’s eight participants made it back.
2026 College World Series: Who’s Still Standing
No. 6 Texas Longhorns — Still Alive
Texas delivered the signature individual performance of the tournament so far. Shortstop Adrian Rodriguez hit for the cycle and drove in seven runs as the Longhorns blew out Alabama 14-2 on Monday, eliminating the Crimson Tide and keeping Texas’s season alive in the elimination bracket. Texas now has to beat Georgia twice this week — having already lost to the Bulldogs 7-1 earlier in the tournament — to advance to face Oklahoma in the semifinal.

No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs — Still Alive
Georgia beat Texas 7-1 in their first meeting but dropped a tight 4-3 decision to Oklahoma on Monday, forcing a win-or-go-home rematch with the Longhorns on Tuesday. Golden Spikes Award candidate Daniel Jackson and one of the best offenses in the country have kept Georgia in every game, but the Bulldogs now need to beat Texas to survive.

Oklahoma Sooners — Undefeated in Omaha
Oklahoma is the story of the tournament. After eliminating No. 2 overall seed Georgia Tech back in the Regional round, the Sooners have not lost a game in Omaha, beating Alabama 9-0 and then edging Georgia 4-3 to clinch a spot in Wednesday’s semifinal. Improved pitching has carried this group all postseason, and they’re now one win away from the championship series no matter who they face.
No. 5 North Carolina Tar Heels — Still Alive
North Carolina has been one of the most consistent teams in the field, beating Ole Miss 6-2 and then West Virginia 5-2 to reach the semifinal round without a loss in Omaha. The Tar Heels await the winner of the West Virginia–Troy rematch.
No. 16 West Virginia Mountaineers — Fighting to Stay Alive
West Virginia lost to North Carolina 5-2 and now must beat Troy in a rematch on Tuesday just to stay in the tournament. The Mountaineers, in their first-ever CWS appearance, opened the tournament with a win over Troy and remain one of the field’s biggest offensive threats.
Troy Trojans — Fighting to Stay Alive
Troy lost the tournament opener to West Virginia but came back to eliminate Ole Miss 12-8 with a seven-run rally across the seventh and eighth innings. Jimmy Janicki and Sean Darnell carried the offense in that win. The Trojans, the only mid-major in the field, now get a rematch with West Virginia with their season on the line.
Alabama Crimson Tide — Eliminated
Alabama’s first CWS trip since 1999 ended Monday in a 14-2 loss to Texas, capped by Adrian Rodriguez’s cycle. The Tide had already been blanked 9-0 by Oklahoma to open their tournament, ending the run after their 26-year drought.
Ole Miss Rebels — Eliminate
Ole Miss lost its opener to North Carolina and was then eliminated by Troy 12-8 after building an early lead. The Rebels’ first CWS trip since their 2022 national championship run ends in the first round.

The Biggest Storylines in Omaha Right Now
Adrian Rodriguez’s Historic Day
The signature moment of the 2026 CWS so far belongs to Texas shortstop Adrian Rodriguez. In Monday’s elimination game against Alabama, Rodriguez hit for the cycle and drove in seven runs, tying the CWS single-game RBI record and recording just the third cycle in tournament history. The 14-2 win kept Texas alive and ended Alabama’s season in the same afternoon.
Oklahoma Hasn’t Lost a Game in Omaha
Oklahoma is the story of this tournament. After upsetting No. 2 overall national seed Georgia Tech back in the Regional round, the Sooners arrived in Omaha and have not dropped a single game — shutting out Alabama 9-0, then grinding out a 4-3 win over Georgia to clinch the first semifinal berth. Improved pitching has been the difference for a team many didn’t see coming.
Two SEC Powers Are Already Out
Despite the SEC sending four teams to Omaha, two have already gone home. Alabama’s first CWS trip since 1999 ended in a 14-2 loss to Texas, and Ole Miss — back in Omaha for the first time since their 2022 national title — was eliminated by Troy after dropping its opener to North Carolina. The SEC’s streak of producing the national champion six years running is now riding on Georgia or Texas.
The Win-or-Go-Home Georgia-Texas Rematch
Georgia beat Texas 7-1 in their first meeting of the tournament, but a tight 4-3 loss to Oklahoma sent the Bulldogs right back into an elimination game against the Longhorns. Whoever wins Tuesday’s rematch advances to face an undefeated Oklahoma team in the semifinal — and whoever loses goes home.
First-Timers West Virginia and Troy Are Still Fighting
West Virginia and Troy, both making their first-ever CWS appearances, split their opening meeting and now face each other again with a season on the line. The winner advances to face a red-hot North Carolina team that hasn’t lost a game in Omaha.
