How the Edmonton Padres Build Trust Through Transparency

Edmonton, Alberta

70+ Teams

500+ Players

The Challenge

Helping players and families understand the player development pathway and bringing visibility to the evaluation and team formation process.

The Outcome

The Edmonton Padres now use TeamGenius to share player development information to better justify the return on investment to parents.

Northeast Zone Baseball [Edmonton Padres] have worked hard over the years to provide a program that is fun and aimed at player development with opportunities for competitive and performance levels of play.

Communication is the Key in Developing Young Athletes

The Edmonton Padres are growing fast. John Sutherland, Technical Director for the program, is responsible for various player development initiatives and instituting the player development pathway across the organization. As the number of players and teams in the organization started to increase, John knew that they needed a scalable process to record, document, and share information with families as players get older and improve.

The goal of frequent testing is to share constructive feedback with players so they can improve. And let’s not kid ourselves, the parents who are paying for their kids to play for a program like this are often involved in the feedback focused conversations as well.

"We wanted to keep it [TeamGenius] as a way to explain to the parents what you're getting in value out of the program and what your son or daughter is doing as far as development."

In a concerted effort to use easy-to-access data to their advantage, John started to see results immediately after sharing this type of information with his athletes.
“TeamGenius allowed us to go to the kids with a printed out or PDF report and send them a full email to say here is the report from evaluations, here’s some of the video where we reference, and then we’ll get on a call to actually walk them through all of that. And when that happened at the 13u level, it was exceptional. The parents had an understanding and the kids obviously had a much better understanding than they have in previous years or in other programs.”

Changing the Perception of Evaluations

In the past, when the Edmonton Padres had to make the tough decision to cut a player or suggest that he or she be on a lower team, it felt like the coaches had all the power and were making these types of decisions in a silo. After a coaches meeting where they explained TeamGenius to the rest of the staff, the coaches walked away excited about the change.
“The whole reason we did it was for transparency and I think the coaches appreciate it because it makes their job easier when you have that tough conversation with somebody and you have to tell them they weren’t quite good enough to make the team this year. As a coach, you’d like any sort of ammo to back that up rather than going in with nothing.”
