March Madness 2026: Everything You Need to Know

At TeamGenius, sports aren’t just what we do — they’re in our DNA. And right now, we’re sitting right in the middle of the greatest stretch of the sports calendar all year: March Madness is tipping off, the Masters is right around the corner, the NHL and NBA playoffs are heating up, and the World Cup is on the horizon. If you’re a coach, a player, or a sports parent, this is your time of year.

But nothing — nothing — tops March Madness. Sixty-eight teams. One bracket. Three weeks of buzzer-beaters, upsets, heartbreak, and highlight reels. And the 2026 NCAA Tournament is shaping up to be one for the books.

NIL has reshaped the college basketball landscape, and a dominant freshman class has set the stage for a tournament unlike any we’ve seen before. Whether you’re filling out a bracket with your team, watching from the bleachers, or coaching through it all — here’s everything you need to know heading into March Madness 2026.

The Favorites: Teams Built to Cut Down the Nets

Every March Madness has a group of teams that walk in with a legitimate shot at the title. In 2026, the favorites list is loaded — and any one of these squads could be hoisting the trophy in April.

Arizona Wildcats

The most complete team in the country. Experience, athleticism, shooting, and defense — the Wildcats have it all and are the odds-on favorite to reach the Final Four.

Duke Blue Devils

Duke is Duke. A No. 1 seed, elite recruiting, and the kind of program that always finds another gear when the stakes are highest. Don’t sleep on the Blue Devils.

Michigan Wolverines

One of the nation’s best rosters top-to-bottom. Michigan comes in as a No. 1 seed with the talent to go the distance.

Houston Cougars

Suffocating defense, tournament-tested experience, and the added edge of playing Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games essentially in their own backyard. Kelvin Sampson’s crew is dangerous.

Florida Gators

The reigning national champions return with the frontcourt that won it all in 2025. Repeat runs are rare, but this roster is built for it.

Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa State is the kind of program that makes opposing coaches nervous. Well-coached, physical, and battle-hardened. T.J. Otzelberger has built something real in Ames.

Dark Horses: Don’t Sleep on These Teams

Every March Madness produces a team or two that no one quite saw coming until it was too late. These are the squads with the pieces to make a deep run — the ones that will have you second-guessing your bracket by the second weekend.

Vanderbilt Commodores

Criminally underseeded by many analysts’ standards. Elite guard play led by Tyler Tanner, and they already proved they could beat Florida in the SEC Tournament. Many in the basketball world feel Vandy got short-changed on Selection Sunday. Watch out.

Arkansas Razorbacks

Arkansas won the SEC Tournament and enters March Madness on fire, winners of 13 of their last 15 games. The story here is freshman phenom Darius Acuff Jr., who has drawn comparisons to tournament legends Kemba Walker and Shabazz Napier in terms of his takeover ability. Sports Illustrated has them going to the Final Four. Believe the hype.

Gonzaga Bulldogs

One of the most consistent programs in college basketball history — and still searching for their first national title. Veteran team, elite coaching under Mark Few, and a physical frontcourt. Gonzaga tends to play their best basketball in March.

Kansas Jayhawks

Full disclosure: I am a KU alum, so consider this pick slightly biased. But the Jayhawks have arguably the No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick in the country in Darryn Peterson. Bill Self knows how to win in March, and a team with that kind of talent can beat anyone. Rock Chalk.

Cinderella Watch: Glass Slipper Teams to Follow

March Madness wouldn’t be March Madness without a Cinderella. These programs don’t belong on paper — until they absolutely do.

Miami (OH) RedHawks

They came within a whisker of a perfect regular season and earned a huge First Four win just to enter the field of 64. This team knows how to grind, won’t be intimidated by anyone, and is already battle-tested heading into the main bracket. A dangerous First Four team.

Hofstra Pride

Hofstra draws a first-round matchup against Alabama — a team dealing with significant off-court distractions after a prominent player’s legal issues. Distracted opponents plus a hungry mid-major is a recipe for one of the great upsets in tournament history. Circle this game on your bracket.
